Historically, however, this feature has not always been highlighted. In the 18th century, Le Pelletier and Cillart de Kerampoul made no mention of it. In 1732, Grégoire de Rostrenen described a phenomenon that was quite different from any found in the present-day dialects. Are we right therefore to assume that palatalisation is as old as has long been supposed? I propose to re-examine this question, counterbalancing the contribution of geolinguistics with other underexploited sources. I will try to demonstrate the hypothesis that there were two waves of palatalisation, in other words that a dorso-palatal pronunciation was followed by a much more recent apico-palatal pronunciation. The dynamic and unstabilised nature of the phenomenon when it was mapped as well as the concomitant hyper-vernacularisation of Breton would seem to a large extent to explain the apparent irrationality of the field data. ; La palatalisation des occlusives vélaires (/k g/, prononcées /ʧ ʤ/) apparaît aujourd’hui comme le trait le plus emblématique des parlers bretons vannetais. Ceci n’a pourtant pas toujours été mis en avant. Au XVIIIe siècle, Le Pelletier et Cillart de Kerampoul n’en disent rien ; Grégoire de Rostrenen en 1732 décrit un phénomène bien différent des parlers actuels. Peut-on dès lors admettre que la palatalisation soit si ancienne qu’on l’a longtemps pensé ? Je propose de réexaminer la question, en pondérant l’apport de la géolinguistique par d’autres sources insuffisamment exploitées. Je tâcherai de démontrer l’hypothèse de deux vagues de palatalisation : à une prononciation dorso-palatale aurait ainsi succédé une prononciation apico-palatale très récente. Le caractère dynamique et non-stabilisé du phénomène au moment même où il était cartographié, ainsi que l’hyper-vernacularisation concomitante du breton expliqueraient en grande partie l’apparente irrationalité des données de terrain.
